About Us
Although there are records of scouts at Walmsley as far back as 1917, the group was first registered in 1948. We are affiliated to the Parish of Christ Church Walmsley, Egerton, and we are most grateful for their continuing support. We also have a strong relationship with Walmsley C of E Primary school, and the wider Egerton community.
Our group's HQ is called The Hideaway. In 1994 The Hideaway that had stood for many years was demolished and the current, purpose built construction replaced it. The new build was only possible due to the establishment of The Supporters' Council which, consisting of parents and volunteers, successfully raised the funds needed and managed the project. The Supporters' Council continues to this day, with the latest successful projects being the extension (to give us more meeting space), and a new kitchen to replace the one that was part of the build back in 1994!
The 78th scout group is one of around 20 groups within our scouting district of Bolton Moorland. The district also has explorer units which is where the scouts move to when they leave their troop. Bolton Moorland district has close links with neighbouring districts and with Greater Manchester North County. We also have scouting friends throughout the UK and abroad. After all, scouting is a global phenomenon, and is sometimes referred to as the largest youth club in the world!
